ESR年代測定・線量計測の原理
<ESRの原理>電子スピン共鳴(ESR, electron spin resonance または EPR, electron paramagnetic resonance)は物質中の不対電子を検出する物理的な計測法です。
電子はそのスピン量子数のために磁気モーメントを持っており、小さい磁石とみなすことができます。不対電子は磁場中に置かれると、その磁気モーメントの向きが磁場に平行あるいは反平行(逆向き)に量子化されます。その磁気モーメントが磁場の向きを向いている電子が安定でエネルギーレベルが低く、反対を向いている電子は不安定でエネルギーレベルが高い状態となります(ゼーマン分裂)。エネルギーレベルの低い状態の電子は光子を吸収してエネルギーレベルの高い状態に遷移するため、この光子であるマイクロ波の吸収を観測することによって電子スピン共鳴を検出することができます。実際の計測においては、マイクロ波回路を用いるため、マイクロ波の周波数が固定されているので、磁場の強度を掃引してマイクロ波の吸収を検出します。まとめると、電子スピン共鳴とは、不対電子が磁場中でマイクロ波を吸収する現象、ということになります。
<線量計測の原理>
物質中の原子同士の化学結合は2つの電子(対電子)でできています。放射線は電離作用を持つため、放射線が当たると電子を電離して不対電子ができます。すなわち、化学結合が切れるという現象が起きます。不対電子をもつ化学結合が切れた状態は不安定なため、動き回る他の電子をとらえてもとの化学結合(対電子)に通常すぐに戻りますが、安定なラジカル(不対電子をもつ化学種)が生成した場合には、不対電子を持ったまま長時間存在することがあります。こうした安定なラジカルは放射線の吸収線量(吸収したエネルギー量)に比例して増加するため、不対電子をESRによって定量することによって、照射された物質の吸収線量を求めることができます。つまり、ESR測定によって放射線の吸収線量(被曝線量)を求めることができます。
例えば、ヒドロキシアパタイトでできている歯のエナメル質は、線量計素子として使用できることがわかっており、歯のエナメルをESRで計測して生成するラジカルを定量することで、人や動物の被曝線量を個体ごとに求めることができます。
<年代測定の原理>
この線量計測の原理を、地質学的試料や考古学的試料に適用することで年代測定を行うことができます。試料は環境中の自然放射線を受け続けるため、古い試料ほど被曝線量が大きく、ESRの信号強度が大きくなるためです。自然放射線の線源は土壌中のウラン、トリウム、カリウム、そして宇宙線です。ESRによって求められるのは自然放射線による総被曝線量(吸収線量)です。試料の周りのウラン、トリウム、カリウムの量を定量し、含水率の補正などをすることによって年間線量率(1年あたりの試料の吸収線量)を推定し、ESRによって求められた総被曝線量を年間線量率で割ることによって年代を算出します。自然放射線による年間線量率は通常 mGy/y のオーダーですが、吸収線量は数万年で数十 Gy、数十万年で数百 Gy のオーダーになります。放射線によって鉱物中に生成するラジカルがこの年代範囲で安定に存在できる必要があります。
